Well... I pretty much combined the two blogs... and I love this Passion for Faithbooking Blog... but I think my family blog has turned into this too... I've decided not to keep family and faithbooking separate... because when I live my life they are not separate... anyway... here is where you'll find what I'm up too... over here at Kiddos and K9s... thank you for reading... 6 Month Review - Resolutions

okay... it's the SIX month mark on resolutions... let's see where I'm at...

1) my scrap booking goal... ha-ha-ha! That was a wash within the first week... being real here. There is no time for me to get a layout done a day... seriously. However... I did attend a scrapbooking retreat and completed with photos and all journaling ALL of 2007. Yes... an entire year completed in one weekend. So... even though I did not manage this resolution very well... I'm getting very close to being up-to-date in my albums... (side note: I keep it simple.)

2) boot camp and weight loss... I'm happy to report I'm still in shape and working out regularly. The bummer thing... I had to stop attending boot camp because of my husband's schedule. But we got a gym membership and that has worked out nicely... and I have a whole lot more flexibility. I miss the accountability and the marine screaming at me to do more - but oh well. I STILL have weight to lose. It's going slow... and this beach vacation hasn't helped... but I'll keep you updated. Boot camp changed my life forever... it's all about the baby steps in the right direction...

3) my master bed room... it's still in the same sad shape it was in back in January. But it's summer... perhaps I'll get inspired by a paint color and go to town... stay tuned.

4) my joy... when I'm busy and stressed it's funny how my joy goes away... but when I am spending time in God's Word and praying - keeping dialogue with the Lord - my joy returns. I'm not talking just happiness (although that is a bi-produce of joy) but often I can let little things (or little people) take my joy... however I'm glad we're in the month of July... hot summer time where I can just hang with my kids until school begins again and life gets busy... until then I think I'll go now and sit on the floor to play with my kiddos and share my joy with them.

preschool end-of-year gifts... buckets filled with all kinds of plastic fun that preschoolers love... made me so happy all stacked up...

2008 New Year Resolutions

I am a goal settin’ kinda girl… and I absolutely take these resolutions seriously and always - ALWAYS - complete my goals and tasks I set for myself by the end of that given year… oh boy I shouldn’t even joke like that… the truth is I really do LOVE goals… I’ve set goals (a.k.a. New Year’s Resolutions) since I was a small child writing in my diary faithfully (remember those little diaries with the petite metal key that posed as the security system to your preteen soul!). Anyway, I can’t remember not setting goals and having high hopes for the new year with fresh starts and new beginnings…

But ALWAYS completing them? Well, that’s another story… I go full steam ahead and then somewhere down the tracks 6 to 8 weeks later the steam runs out… but it’s okay. Grace. I’m a wife and mom of two small (but getting much bigger) children who’s trying to manage a whole lot of life - be a good steward of what the Lord has given us… including our home and our bodies… loving my kids and disciplining them… tending to my best friend - my husband and making him a priority… hanging out with my girl friends… making some extra dough… you get the idea… surely I’m not alone here. What, you can relate? Shew!

And knowing myself as well as I do… I still make over achieving resolutions for the New Year… and probably always will! But here are my top few… they seem manageable to me… well, all but one seems manageable.

So it does not surprise me (and may not surprise those who know me best) that I’m going to attempt my first ever scrap booking challenge for one of my goals… you can read more about that here (and understand why this one may seem a little over-the-top!)

Also… back to Boot Camp Jan. 8th -- got to get these last 10 pounds off. (Didn’t gain ANY holiday weight - thank you very much!)

I’d like to create an amazing master bedroom… (What I’d really like is to win one of those makeover contest where the fortunate family leaves for the week and comes back to the most amazing room they have ever seen… chances of that happening are slim… so I guessI'll be doing the work myself.

I want to walk with the Lord… not get down with the mundane tasks in life… the monotony… no complaining... I want to really have joy… I want to just have fun with my kids… and my husband… fun with my friends. Not that this all hasn’t happened in the past… just have more focus… more concerted effort to choose joy… so my ONE WORD this year for 2008 is JOY.

inspired by Ali Edwards project she shared last year.... you can see it here and you can read and see more about it in her latest book... which I got for Christmas and I LOVE it... my heart hurts when I look at it... I want so bad to just sit and create things...

I made several of these for family and close friends... each one was obviously individually made and not one alike... I took Ali's idea and ran with it... I began these last Spring. But should have finished before Thanksgiving... note to self: next time I make all my gifts I need to complete them before Thanksgiving!
...and found this fun ornament idea on Two Peas... the above photo is my rendition. You could do so much with this. Even thinking about teacher Valentine gifts doing this... hummm.....

also... really love this idea for next year...

better get busy... no time like the present! ha!

Christmas gift sneak peak...

oh it's been a while since I've been able to create anything... been SO busy with family & school. Just returned from a 4 day scrapbooking get-away... it was SO much fun. We had a record breaking 17 ladies with us this time... I got a ton done... I'll post pictures later... but on to something even more fun... a sneak peak of what I'm working on for Christmas presents... inspired by this gal -- who I just can't get enough of... and wish I had all the time in the world to just simply create things...

I'll post pictures of the finished product at a later time when I've disbursed these fun gifts...

the truth is... I can't find the book. Since we left on vacation several weeks ago -- I'M MISSING THE BOOK! How embarrassing... but I'll find it and we'll continue to program. We have MUCH to discuss.

Step 7 - Reach Out To The Needy

"She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches our her hands to the needy."
- Proverbs 31:20

First of all I must say your comments on previous posts are so great... I love this "discussion" and learning from all of you...

Hospitality... perhaps a lost concept in our day and time? Is it unheard of in your circle of friends and family to drop in unexpectedly or stop over without calling first? I LOVE it when people drop by my house with out calling... makes me feel like they must be comfortable doing that. My house is never "company friendly" at all times... but it's good for people to drop by and see us for who we really are.

What does hospitality have to do with reaching out to the needy? Everything. The book points out these two Scriptures... "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for therby some have entertained angels unawares" (Heb. 13:2 KJV) "Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality" (Rom. 12:13 NIV)

We just came from my husband's sister's home in Colorado. She and her husband LOVE having people in their home. Everything about their home exudes hospitality. They have built an incredible back yard specifically for groups of people. With plenty of chairs, tables and yes, heaters. They always have two vacant guest rooms for visitors. And never miss a beat to spend time with you and make you feel important. They are true examples of reaching out to their families.

We happen to have such great neighbors... two of which kept an eye on our home while we were out of town... and took in our mail. We take dinners over to families who have just had babies... and have been the recipient of meals ourselves. The community in which we live has ample possibilities for service... helping others is what I want my kids to remember we did a lot of. This is something that will mold and shape them into adulthood. I look forward to spending a Thanksgiving or Christmas day with my children in a soup kitchen serving those who may not have a home.

There are so many ways we can reach out to the needy... exemplify hospitality... and serve others. How do yo help others without feeling overwhelmed or neglecting your family?

Step 6 - Work Hard and Be Creative

"She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle."
- Proverbs 31:13, 19 NIV

Man, back in their day the Hebrew women had no choice but to work hard... can you imagine a days work with out washing machines, dishwashers, dry cleaners, butchers, produce departments, vacuums, etc.? But they also didn't have their blog to update, scrapbooks, phone calls to return and "room mom" to keep up with... But really, one of the points of this passage I believe is that she worked "with delight". Oh how I wish I could say that was my attitude during my daily grind of laundry and emptying the dishwasher and all the other household duties on my list.

Another point is that the Proverbs 31 woman works productively and she enjoyed working with her hands... she probably made work fun. Which takes effort. She was creative... She was not lazy... She was hard working.

The book points out this passage (and I love it):
"Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun -- blue, purple, scarlet yarn or fine linen, and all the women who were willing and had the skill spun the goat hair... Then Moses said... See, the Lord... has filled him with the spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts." Exodus 35:25-26,31NIV

I enjoy this passage - we can honor God and glorify Him in our household work, with our hobbies and creative abilities. I think that is glorious.

Loved how my teachers gifts turned out... so fun. These little flower pots came from Walmart and have chalk boards on the front... filled with a few fun things and there ya go! Loved Hudson's teachers this year... would have given them a million dollars if I had it...

Step 5 - Get in Shape

"She girds herself with strength

I don't know about any of you out their reading this - but after I turned 30 and after I had babies changed happened to my body both inside and out... suddenly the weight didn't come off quite as easily as it had pre-30 and pre-babies. Oh well... such as life, right?

I enjoyed this chapter of the book because it helps me keep perspective on why I really need to be in shape... not because I want to be like Hollywood, not because I want others to like be based on my looks and not because being thin is best no matter the cost. I want to be healthy. I want to have energy for my kids. I want to be attractive to my husband. I want my kids to be proud of their mom because she takes care of herself.

Often I'm the last person I take care of... I recently took inventory of my wardrobe and it's basically Walmart T-shirts and capri sweat pants. (not that there is anything wrong with that!) But I just needed to take a little more time for my appearance - think through outfits and work at wearing fun things...

This past year I've been educated in all areas of nutrition. The Lord placed three different moms in my life casually who have totally influenced my outlook on nutrition and have changed how our family eats forever. I've seen the change in diet influence our energy levels, waist line, children's behavior and over all health. We still have more improvements to make - baby steps - but we're getting there!

Step 4 - Balance Home and Career

God's timing is amazing... reading this chapter on the week that Danny and I made an important decision about my new part-time business venture. Now, I feel all the more the importance of my role to balance my home and now my business in order to maintain our peaceful and (on a good day) orderly home. I'm encouraged by the Proverbs 31 woman - she is creative in how she makes money, uses wisdom in her investments and manages her life to first and for most honor God.

Quoting the book 12 Steps To Becoming A More Organized Woman by Lane P. Jordan, when it comes to moms who work outside the home "Each woman needs to ask the Lord what is best for her and her family." Every mom out there is in their own unique and individual situation with a whole different set of dynamics surrounding theme - which would be the basis of their working outside of the home... or not...

I've met some amazing ladies - godly moms - over the past 5 years who have come up with all kinds of creative ways to make money and be home with their children... the Lord truly provides. All that to say I really appreciate the authors insight on this topic...

Step 3 - Schedule Your Day

Some of you reading this who really know me - know that mornings are my best time. As I've gotten older I've enjoyed getting up earlier. I LOVE being up before the kids to have my time with the LORD and then peaceful blog time before the little critters are up and about.

But if you do not enjoy getting up early... I believe this passage is pointing out that this woman made a conceded effort to plan and organize for her household. Maybe you do this after the kids (or your husband) have gone to bed... that's your best time.

Our morning continues... pretty much the same thing everyday. Having a scheduled day has been easy for me... because I love routine. It's especially good for the kiddos because they know what to expect when... if Hudson asks to do computer time but it's not time for that - we have less of an argument when I respond with, "Well, computer time is at 1:00 and you can do it then. But right now it's xyz time". Less having to say "no" to my kids and just being more positive.

I truly enjoy this chapter of the book... it talks about purging your home of things you don't need (I've been doing this for over a year now - how much stuff does one need?). Reduce choices and prioritize. Do the hardest tasks first... (boy I love this one... I use to practice this when I worked full-time - doing the very thing I didn't want to do first so it wasn't lurking over me all day long.) Have a place for everything (I'll be working on this one the rest of my life.) Etc... good stuff.

Step 2: Plan Your Shopping, Cooking & Traveling

Since college I've studied the Proverbs 31 Woman and have aspired to be like her from the moment the Scripture was first pointed out to me... and in my immaturity I thought, "If I want to be the Proverbs 31 Woman, then I will be the Proverbs 31 Woman" - like it's that easy.

Now.. the rubber has met the road... I'm in my 30s with a home to manage, two small children and a husband (family, friends, ministry, hobbies...) Living like the Proverbs 31 Woman isn't quite as easy as I imagined. But I still aspire to be like her and I have a deeper respect for her.

In this chapter of the book 12 Steps To Becoming A More Organized Woman the author, Lane P. Jordan, gives some practical tips in managing shopping, cooking and traveling.

For me, nutrition is a big deal... and I'm new at being nutrition minded... I also need to save money BIG TIME... I dislike cooking (I pray about this a lot!) and traveling... we do have two trips planned this year... so

Yes, it's true I'm going to partake in a 12 Step Program... 12 Steps To Becoming A More Organized Woman by Lane P. Jordan. Included in the book are practical tips for managing your home and your life base on Proverbs 31. I plan to use my Faithbooking blog as a journal of sorts for my progress... don't want to post this journey on our family blog... since most of my family members who read my blog probably just want to know about the kiddos and not if or when I'm cleaning my toilet bowls.

I hope those of you who read this will post comments of your own regarding the different topics and what works for you...

Step 1: Be An Excellent Wife
"An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels." Proverbs 31:10 NASB

Her worth is far above jewels... rare... valuable. Her husband is priority even before the kids (a.k.a. the squeaky wheels.) She maintains her husband as her best friend... she works at their relationship. She lives to make him happy... Her husband is proud of her...

What does being an excellent wife have to do with being organized? Beginning with what is most important to the Lord and that's getting our priorities straight. (1) God, (2) husband, (3) family, etc.

Boy I wish I could say this is true of me on a daily basis. The truth is - in my heart I know this is the right way and yet in action applies to me mostly on good days... when I have had plenty of sleep, good healthy food, my emotions are in check, the children were perfect all day and all the stars were in alignment.

This is hard... often my husband comes second before the kids because they are so loud! Or I take something out on him that I shouldn't have... I'm fortunate that my husband extends a lot of grace my way... the Lord knows I need it. Always good to be reminded to put my husband first (but after God) and the children second. Not always easy but good to keep working on...

aezine challenge

Ali's challenge this week is to create a layout with the non-essential elements in scrapbooking... "current list of favorite non-essentials - the stuff that I seem to be really into right now"

Although I do keep things simple... I LOVE making CM 7x7 albums... the feeling of working on something on a smaller scale and completing an album... completion - since all my other albums are on-going. The two 7x7 albums I'm working on currently are birthday albums... one for Hudson and one for Emma. They will be a work in progress from year to year but will be easily kept up-to-date. Would make an excellent gift, too -- make the page and leave out the pictures for someone else to fill in year to year!

The non-essential elements I've included in these layouts are...
1. paint - lovin' the foam stamps and paint
2. circle cutter & circle punch - can't get enough of circles
3. stamp sets - especially my alphabets and designs
4. rub-ons - make you feel like such an artist!
5. corner rounder - never thought I'd be pulling that thing out again!
6. patterned paper - learning how to use it more efficiently thank to Ali's new book
7. enlarging my photos & being selective with what I have printed
8. lighting - learning how to turn off my flash from the pros & lovin' the natural results
9. blogs - learning so much from others - especially Ali Edwards blog.

I'm not messy, I'm creative...

I've spent the last two weeks cleaning out our computer room... I've managed to get things organized (why do I have SO much junk?) so I thought I could sit and work on my albums with out guilt. I'm excited to say I've got a lot done and feel like I'm finding my style of scrap booking... somewhere in between keeping it simple, not breaking the bank and keeping the focus on my pictures and what God is doing around us. My new little scrapbook area has been nice, neat and organized until tonight... I like seeing all my fun toys thrown about... My grandmother who raised me always said I was so messy... and I'd reply, "I'm not messy! I'm creative!" Finding the artist in me again... where has she gone anyway???

Essentials

I admit it… I keep it simple but oh how I LOVE the art in scrapbooking. My favorite is the photography. I never want to do anything in my layout to take away from the photo. And then the journaling… telling the story… that’s the meat for me.

So in response to Ali Edwards challenge this week, here are my essentials – if I had to keep a modest amount of supplies… it would be easy for me:

My Camera… Canon Rebel XT. Love this thing and drive my family bonkers using it all the time. It seems like little Emma is in a constant state of “cheese!”
Round Tip Pens… black and cocoa from Creative Memories. Love to use my own handwriting and do lots of story telling and Scripture.
Adhesive… love Creative Memories tape runner… always have, always will.
Classic Paper… although I’m beginning to step out of the box.
My Journal… keep it near me and jot down things the kids do or God Moments (even the smallest) so I can remember and get them in our albums.
Alphabet Stamp Set… classy and timeless.

Artful Moment

I’ve been asked by a couple of friends how I made the clip board hanging on my fridge (and one seen hanging on a clip board at a friend’s house!). So I thought I'd take the time to explain how I made this adorable clipboard – I use it as our family calendar but you could use it for anything. Pretty simple how I do it – but if you do an altered clipboard search on Two Peas in a Bucket you’ll find many more ideas with a whole lot more to them.

I took a plain 9’ x 15 ½ ” clipboard from Staples. (I’ve seen even cuter ones at other craft stores but the office store one is cheap and I did these for Christmas gifts last year so I needed a whole lot.) Found a green shade of acrylic paint that matches my décor and painted the whole clip board. After the green dried, I took some brown paint and rubbed it around the edges. With black permanent stamping ink - I stamped our last name in black with Making Memories foam stamps called “Philadelphia”.

At the top of the clipboard I tied many different colored and patterned ribbons and trimmed them with pinking shears. Tied a ribbon around the middle of the clipboard and taped it in the back to prevent sliding.

Then I cut a piece of decorative paper to back my calendar page. (You could match your paper for each season but I have kept this bandana paper for over a year now.) The calendar I produce using a table in Microsoft Publisher but you could easily make a calendar form a table in Word or Excel, etc. I hot glued several magnets on the back…

And there ‘ya have it!

Embrace Imperfection

I've felt the pressure lately to have my pages in my albums look beautiful... magazine quality lay out - to have every new gadget and paper fad and rub-on. But I'm reminded of what is important... and it's not what my layouts look like.

I have a baby book that my dear mother half filled out. Not every line has information in it. Not every page has a doo dad. In fact, on some of the pages she just glued in baby cards that people had sent to her. But let me tell you what it does have... my moms handwriting, it has the date of my first drive-in-movie, it says "you sure hate vegetables!" (no wonder!)

My point is... my mom has passed away... so I treasure this album. I treasure her words written in it and the things she found important. In the same way I need to embrace imperfection and keep my perspective on what my kids will value one day... and when they take all 30 albums I've filled I'm sure they won't be quite as critical as I am on my creative abilities.

Remembering What's Important from 2006

New Years’ Resolutions…. It’s that time again, we’re almost two weeks into the new year. I wonder how many of us sat down to write out our New Year’s Resolutions… you know, the things we have great intentions to fulfill. If you’re like me, to consider what I want to do differently in the new year, I have to consider where I have been in the old year.

The problem we face many times is that we “remember what we should forget – and we forget what we should remember.” It’s so easy to dwell on our failures, what we didn’t accomplish, what we didn’t follow through with, the relationships that weren’t glorifying to God, that sometimes we miss the absolute best things to dwell on – what God did!

Philippians 3:13-14 says, “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

And Psalm 77:11-12 says, “I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.”

So what we should remember about 2006 is the amazing ways God worked in our lives – and in the lives of those around us. What we need to forget is our failures and whatever is holding us down, making us feel like failures heading into a new year. Confess them to the Lord and move on. Lindsey Kane has a saying – CRAMO – Confess, Repent, and MOVE ON ! I love that.

So here’s what helps me do that…. About 4 years ago, I started doing a “Blessings Album” for my family at the end of each year in just a small 7x7 album, or now in a StoryBook album. I love making the list of blessings and God moments, finding pictures that capture most of them and then recording them for us to review during the year. First off, it helps me relive those moments and really focus on God while I’m making the album, but secondly, it sits on our coffee table during the year so when we’re having a bad day, when finances are tough, when life just seems “yucky”, we can quickly review just how “blessed” we really are. It puts the day or trial into perspective for us.

I pray that if you haven’t already, you will sit down in the next week or so and write out your list of blessings and God Moments for 2006. If you have a memory like mine, you’ll need to pray for God to help you remember (and He will be faithful to flood your memory). But also, your next step is to grab a spiral notebook and begin jotting those things down as they happen in 2007. That is the only thing that saves me each year! Nothing fancy, just an entry that has the date and what God did. You’ll never regret doing this – and you’ll be amazed reading through it later of all the things you would have forgotten had you not written them down.

Here’s some questions to get you going:

What are some blessings you received in 2006 that you didn’t deserve?
What are you thankful for?
What prayers did God answer for you in 2006? Or what prayers are you grateful that He didn’t answer?
What people did He place in your life to encourage you – or grow you – last year? What people were removed from your life? (births, deaths, friendships, mentors/mentees)
Did He take you on a new path career wise?
Did He help you see the reason you are where you are – and help you have contentment with being there?
What name of Himself did He reveal to you during the year? (my rock, my teacher, my shelter, etc.)
What “theme” best describes what He taught you in 2006? (love, patience, obedience, etc)
What adversity did you face that brought you closer to Him?

Heavenly Father, thank you that as we think upon the year that has ended we have the opportunity to remember what YOU did in and around us. Thank you for answered, and sometimes unanswered, prayers. Thank you for revealing yourself in through Your WORD, other people, circumstances, and our churches. Thank you for your protection each and every day in a crazy world. Thank you for allowing us to see others come to know you – and for giving us assurance when saved loved ones leave us to be with you. Thank you for the undeserved blessings that you continually pour out each and every day. We love you Father and we are grateful for all that You do! Amen.

What is Faithbooking?

Faithbooking is making an intentional effort in recording what the Lord is working out and actively doing in your life and the lives of those around you - in your scrapbooking albums.

The benefits to faithbooking:

Faithbooking will increase your faith. When we look back and take note of times in our lives when we remember God's provision, His healing, His peace during a difficult time... our faith in Him grows.

Faithbooking demonstrates obedience in training our children about the Lord's faithfulness.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are upon your hearts, impress them on your children.” Deut. 6: 5-6

“We will tell the next generation the praise worthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders He has done.” Psalm 78:4
